Oh Baby, it’s COLD outside….
On a cold, winter’s day, there’s nothing that warms up the body and soul like a comforting cup of hot cocoa. There’s just one problem:
Almost all store-bought hot cocoas have preservatives to ensure they last longer, or artificial additives to enhance the flavor. Think you can just transition to hot chocolate? Think again: Hot chocolate tends to be super high in sugar and fat, making it more of a “tread-lightly” treat than something you want to drink everyday.
However, there is good news: The essential ingredient in hot chocolate – the cocoa powder – can actually be good for you. Cocoa solids are the form cocoa powder takes before it’s powdered, and they are packed with nutrients.
In fact, the solids contain significant amounts of plant chemicals called flavanols and, according to some studies, could have positive effects on your heart health and blood pressure.
That’s why I made cocoa powder the basis for my new and healthy hot chocolate that you drink everyday!
You can feel great drinking it because there’s zero added sugar (though you can add maple syrup if you like )... And I even cranked things up a notch with the inclusion of the fiber and folate-boosting power of beet powder. (Beetroots have long been associated with numerous health benefits, including improved blood flow, lower blood pressure, and increased exercise performance.)
To top it all off, I rounded out the recipe with my favorite gut-friendly kitchen-helper, Just Thrive Probiotic… Because a healthy gut is truly the gateway to feeling your best in any season.
Hope you enjoy!
