Two and a half years ago I got sick. Very sick. So sick that I struggled to focus and finish the semester my junior year of college. I had the flu, followed by pnemonia, and severe gastritis (inflammation of the stomach). My heart rate was 100+ BPM while I slept and I couldn't focus on my schoolwork or workout for months. I was put on antibiotics to treat the pneumonia which gave me more stomach pain and then on omprazole (an antacid) to treat the stomach pain.
By the end of my 1 month omeprazol prescription I was feeling marginally better. My acute illness symptoms had subsided, but the chronic stomach pain, heartburn, nausea and constipation had not gone away. I took my last dose of the omprazole and the next day I went into the dining hall med free hoping I could transition to normal eating again as I had been advised by my doctor. It was not to be. I had a nice breakfast of eggs, toast, potatoes and orange juice and I felt fine. Two hours later sitting in class the heartburn spiked so severely in a way I had never experienced. Burning nausea and dizziness that was so bad I thought I was going to vomit. I walked out of the classroom to the bathroom. I sat by the toilet waiting. The nausea slowly subsided but the horrible burning continued. I couldn't escape it. I had never experienced anything like this. I frantically googled for further solutions. It all came to the same conclusion: Don't take antacids and take Probiotics.
Well stopping the medication was easy enough since I had run out anyway.
But what kind of probiotics should you take?
More than 99% of the DNA inside our bodies is not our own but the DNA from microorganisms that live inside us. For perspective bacteria make up 4-6lbs of our body weight.
I went on a journey searching for good probiotics. I took a standard Walmart brand one. I took Culturelle, I took another more expensive brand. I tried a different version of the bacterial strain in Culturelle. At this point after 4 failed attempts over the course of a few months I was starting to loose hope in the idea of probiotics. I had lost a lot of body weight and my daily symptoms were still painfully distracting. One day I found a video that mentioned a probiotic produced by the company "Just Thrive". They mentioned it was more expensive, but this brand was distinctly different. Most probiotics are not well-formulated and die from your stomach acid before they ever make it to your intestines where they should be. The strains of bacteria included in this probiotic were chosen for their natural ability to survive stomach acid and make it alive to the intestines to improve digestion, nutrient absorption and your immune system. One of the bacterial strains included also produces antioxidants to help prevent cellular breakdown.
It was September 30th, 2019. I took the first dose. I didn't really feel that different. Then, to my pleasant surprise, the unthinkable happened the next morning. I had my first normal bowel movement in over a year! This might sound hilarious but after over a year of painful and inconsistent bowel movements and fatigue/burning pain I was elated. I kept up my regime of Just Thrive Probiotics (1 a day with breakfast) and I had normal bowel movements 5/7 days a week instead of 2/7. Within a month I noticed my daily energy levels were improving and my digestive symptoms day-to-day were markedly better. It was fantastic.
I cannot thank this brand enough for making such an incredible product that actually works and has improved my health so substantially in 9 months time. Along with slowly eating more food every week, relaxing before meals, and weight lifting 2-4 times a week I gained 30lbs and my energy and focus are through the roof!
I recommend this to ANYONE suffering from any sort of digestive issues. Combined with good eating habits (relaxing during meals which can be hard when you still have symptoms and you anticipate pain) and little bit of self-acceptance that I wasn't born with perfect digestion to begin with, my daily symptoms are down 95% and I honestly forget most days that I was really sick!
So to anyone out there who is suffering from digestive issues, give this probiotic a try. I cannot recommend it enough!
