Researchers discovered that the body’s naturally harsh stomach acid, which is necessary for digesting all types of foods, kills off 99.99% of the probiotic strains in the major sources of probiotics long before those products could even get to the small intestine. Yogurts, Greek Yogurts and the majority of products sold at health food stores do not survive passage through the harsh stomach environment and so are dead on arrival to the intestines.
Quick Answer: Most probiotics do not survive digestion. Stomach acid destroys roughly 99.99% of the live bacteria in common sources like yogurt, Greek yogurt, and many shelf-stable supplements, so they arrive in the intestines dead and, by the scientific definition, are no longer probiotics. For a probiotic to work, it has to reach the gut alive. In a head-to-head comparison, Just Thrive's spore-based strains were the only ones that survived the stomach intact and reached the small intestine, where they can colonize and support digestion, nutrient production, and immune health. The key takeaway: survivability, not the CFU count on the label, determines whether a probiotic can actually help.
Which Probiotics Survive Stomach Acid?
Very few do. In a comparison of Just Thrive against yogurt, Greek yogurt, and a leading health-food-store brand, only Just Thrive survived the stomach to reach the intestines, where probiotics need to arrive alive to do their job.
A recent study comparing Just Thrive to 1) yogurt, 2) Greek yogurt and 3) the leading probiotic brand sold in health food stores, found that ONLY Just Thrive Probiotic was able to make it ALL THE WAY through the challenging acidic stomach digestive environment to the small intestine. There, our friendly bacteria were able to colonize for optimal digestive health and overall wellness. The challengers (yogurt, Greek yogurt and the leading probiotic) did not survive the body’s harsh stomach acid and so, by definition, are NOT probiotics. In fact, the majority of products on the shelf are NOT actually probiotics; they are simply dead bacteria and do not fit the World Health Organization and accepted scientific definition of what qualifies as a “Probiotic.”

This graph shows the results of this study. All products EXCEPT for Just Thrive have less than 0.1% survival through the stomach. Just Thrive was the only product that showed 100% survival through the gastric system, thus providing 100% effectiveness as a probiotic.
| Product | Survival through the stomach (study) |
|---|---|
| Just Thrive (spore-based Bacillus) | ~100% |
| Yogurt | Less than 0.1% |
| Greek yogurt | Less than 0.1% |
| Leading health-food-store probiotic | Less than 0.1% |
How Does Just Thrive Survive Digestion?
Just Thrive uses spore-forming Bacillus strains whose protective shell withstands stomach acid, so they reach the intestines alive and can colonize, aid digestion, and support immune health, which dead bacteria cannot do.
Just Thrive’s carefully selected strains and proprietary formulation ensures that our probiotic can naturally survive through the stomach to get into the intestines where they colonize and produce their potent probiotic effect. Because Just Thrive survives 100%, it’s able to aid digestion, support healthy bowels, produce key nutrients and antioxidants, as well as provide powerful immune support. Dead bacteria do not provide these same benefits.
Frequently Asked Questions About Probiotic Survival
Do probiotics survive stomach acid?
Most do not. Stomach acid is designed to break down what you eat, and it destroys the large majority of live bacteria in common probiotic sources before they reach the intestines.
Why do most probiotics die before reaching the gut?
Typical probiotic bacteria have no protection against the heat, acid, and enzymes of digestion, so they break down on the way through the stomach.
Does a probiotic still count if the bacteria are dead on arrival?
To deliver probiotic benefits, the bacteria need to reach the gut alive. If they do not survive digestion, they cannot colonize or support the microbiome the way a probiotic is meant to.
What makes spore-based probiotics survive digestion?
Spore-based Bacillus strains carry a tough endospore shell that withstands stomach acid, so they arrive in the intestines intact and ready to work.
How do I know if my probiotic survives digestion?
Look for named spore-based Bacillus strains on the label, and for survivability data rather than just a high CFU count.
