Kiran, is it true that someone could be exercising, eating what they consider eating perfectly clean, yet they still have issues going on in their gut that's causing symptoms that they completely miss that are directly tied to the gut microbiome?

When you look at diet and you look at exercise and sleep, all of those things are critically important. But what they are is they are inputs into the body. The body has to take those inputs and then do something with it.

And the microbes control a lot of what you can do with those inputs. And so you're not going to get the maximum benefit out of your exercise, out of your clean diet, out of your sleep and rest if your microbes are dysfunctional and your system cannot take full advantage of those inputs.

Now the average person, they hear about the importance of the gut microbiome, the way you explain it so brilliantly and they just say, okay, I'm just going to go buy some probiotics. And it's a multi, as you know, multi-billion dollar industry. It's very popular.

It's grown over the years with not just probiotics, but like kombucha drinks and things that are probiotic rich, probiotic rich for yogurts. And now you've made the case that a good percentage of the probiotics out there are not even used properly. They are depleted in the gut with stomach acids and different processes.

How do you break down probiotics and what actually is working versus what's not working?

Yeah, there's a scientific definition for a probiotic. This is established by the World Health Organization, actually widely accepted by researchers in the world of probiotics, gut health, microbiology, and so on. The scientific definition is that a probiotic is a live microorganism when delivered in adequate amounts confers a health benefit to the host.

So for something to be a probiotic, it has to meet all aspects of that definition. So first, it has to be a live microorganism, which means that if it gets to the site of action, it has to get there alive. Number two, you have to demonstrate that when you administer adequate amounts, meaning that there's a dose dependency to its effect, that it confers health benefit to the host, which means it has to be a measurable health benefit.

So what a probiotic isn't is a random hodgepodge collection of 15, 20, 30 strains that are nonsensically thrown together, that are either in the refrigerator or in some special capsule, that when you consume them, they just die off in your system and pass right through as completely transient organisms. You have to demonstrate that you can get them alive to the site of action. You have to demonstrate that when you dose them in the right amount, that they confer a health benefit to the host.

The problem with most probiotics in the market is not a lot of logic has gone into how they thrown these strains together. They don't do any clinical studies on the finished product, which is really important because microbes can cancel out each other's functions when you mix them together and they don't actually demonstrate what the health benefit to the host is. Especially, and this is one of the most critical aspects of a functional probiotic, is what does it do to the microbiome?

Because ultimately, it's the shift in the microbiome that's going to provide you the long-lasting benefit. If not, it's a passing thing. You might get some immunomodulatory effects in passing as the microbes are going through you over 10, 12, 15-hour period.

But what you really want is you really want a foundational shift in the microbiome that then shifts the lining of your gut, the immune system, and everything else about the digestive tract that affects your whole body, right? So that level of sophistication is rarely seen in the probiotic space.

Prebiotics Postbiotics

I think a lot of people have heard of the probiotics, the term probiotics, but then there are newer terms out there, prebiotics and postbiotics. You just broke down what probiotics are, but can you explain what prebiotics are and what postbiotics are?

Yeah. So prebiotic has to be a complex carbohydrate that the human system cannot digest and assimilate. So we don't have the enzymes to break down these complex carbohydrates.

When I say complex, I mean, they really are complex. When you look at a conventional carbohydrate, it's typically at the end of the day, glucose molecules that are bound together. So normally glucose molecules can be bound in a single long chain.

It's called a 1, 6 bond. So it's like the molecule at the 6th position and the molecule at the 1 position are bound to the molecule of the 1 and 6th position of the next glucose molecule. So it's not a very complex chain.

Now, when you get these really complex carbohydrates, they can be bound in much more sophisticated ways in that it becomes really hard to break them apart enzymatically. The human system simply doesn't have the capability of doing that, which means that these carbohydrates go undigested in our small bowel. They move to the large bowel, and then once they get to the large bowel, only certain classes of microbes have the capability of breaking them down and using them for growth and energy.

So prebiotic has to be a complex carbohydrate that is not digestible by the human system, moves on into the large bowel where it gets fermented by beneficial bacteria. That's a key component, right? So certain very just kind of broad fibers and things like that could be broken down by dysfunctional bacteria as well, thereby feeding dysfunctional bacteria.

But a true prebiotic should be one that is quite specific for really important beneficial microbes. Now, a postbiotic, actually there's two conflating terms to it. What the industry and the scientific community generally has thought of a postbiotic as a compound that the microbes make that are beneficial to the host.

You're probably familiar with butyrate, of course, and propionate, and acetate, and urolithins, and all of these really amazing compounds. These are compounds that microbes are making that we can't make ourselves that are really important to our health and function. That's one way of thinking about postbiotics.

But from a regulatory perspective, the FDA has now said that a postbiotic is a dead microbe that confers a health benefit. Because it doesn't fit the probiotic definition, but some dead microbes can still have an impact because they have unique components on their outer cell membrane. Those outer cell membrane components can act like signaling molecules.

The FDA said, well, we can't call them probiotics because they don't meet that definition, so we're going to call them postbiotics. You'll hear the term postbiotics used for both of those categories, compounds that microbes make, but also dead bacteria that could have a health benefit.

Interesting. With the prebiotics, what foods are examples of prebiotic complex carbohydrates?

Yes. You'll find them in resistant starches, so like roots and tubers. Roots and tubers have a ton of it.

Nuts and seeds will have insoluble versions of those prebiotic fibers. You also find them in certain fruits. Fibrous fruits will tend to have what we call fructo-oligosaccharides, FOSs.

Then some fermented dairies will have galacto-oligosaccharides, which is a dairy-based prebiotic. If you can get some raw fermented dairy, can be loaded with some of these galacto-oligosaccharides. Or if you eat fibrous fruits like kiwis, mangoes, for example, certain types of berries, they'll also have a fibrous component, which is the fructo-oligosaccharides.

Do you recommend having these prebiotic foods on a daily basis?

If you can, yeah. It's good to have them with every meal, a little bit of it, because what you really want to do is that with every meal that goes in, your microbiome, your digestive system activates, and it goes into a phase of metabolic processing, which means that it's really important that it's turning on certain metabolic processes that not only are important for digesting the food, but then controlling your appetite, controlling your glucose response, controlling your fat burn and all of that. Because it's not the food that you're eating that we can break down that does any of that, it's the food that we can't break down that signals that.

Let me give you an example of that. If we eat foods that we do a really good job breaking down only, so let's say we get no prebiotics or fiber in with that particular meal. Let's say we get some really highly bioavailable proteins and some healthy fats in there.

We're going to break them down and assimilate them and utilize them in our body, but we're not getting the satiety signaling that we should be getting because a lot of the satiety signaling actually comes from the formation of short chain fatty acids from the prebiotics that the microbes are fermenting for us during that meal and digestive period. It's the increase in butyrate and propionate that actually activates our natural GLP-1s, and it also activates something called AMPK, which is a mechanism that triggers fat burning in the system. The satiety signaling comes from the foods that the microbes need to eat while we're eating.

From an evolutionary perspective, our ancestors ate roots and tubers and they foraged, and so virtually every meal, they had some form of prebiotics that went in there and bitter compounds as well, which is another really important category for digestion. Because between the prebiotics and the bitters, those two things turn on all the digestive machines and turn on all the satiety and metabolic systems as well. We're not getting our full digestive capability, our full metabolic control mechanisms activating without feeding the microbes, without triggering the bitter receptors.

Bitters for Digestion

Yeah, I'm so glad you brought up the bitter conversation. And I see a lot, I've taken probably, I don't know, 10, 12,000 different people through keto, fasting, carnivore protocols. And there are a few things that come up when you take this amount of people through these protocols.

And one of the main reasons why I see people struggle with a higher fat diet, lower carb diet is because their liver can't break down the dietary fats. They have thick sluggish bile, as you know. And I always tell them, increase the bitters in your food.

Eat more arugula, apple cider vinegar, lemons, limes, etc. Take a high quality, bitter supplement, which you have one, which we'll talk about. And just doing that one thing has made a huge difference from them because they went from feeling nauseous after eating high fat meals and having loose stools and diarrhea to actually being able to do it long enough for it to make a difference in their diet.

So have you seen that to be the case when people who have a backed up liver, this hepatic biliary sludge, and they support it with bitter rich foods or the right supplement, have you seen huge improvements there?

Yeah, absolutely. And scientifically, it makes complete sense because we evolved to have these bitter taste receptors. And I know they're called bitter taste receptors, so we often associate them with the tongue, but you actually have them throughout the entire digestive tract.

And the highest concentrations go well beyond the mouth. So you have them in the small bowel, on the liver, on the pancreas, on the gallbladder. You even have bitter taste receptors on your heart.

That's how important these compounds are. So we have to imagine that our ancestors inevitably ate bitter compounds with everything that they consumed. Because again, they were foraging and so on, and gathering and so on.

And all of that foraging, gathering activity contain small amounts of bitters throughout their diet. What's so interesting about it is that the bitter receptors have evolved to becoming signaling molecules to turn on digestive switches, right, within the body. Because the brain needs to know when things are coming through and where things are in the digestive track in order to turn on the right switches.

And the way we've evolved is that bitters go in first, right? And so, and as you know, many cultures also have developed that, you know, that are thousand-year-old traditions. They drink a little bitter drinks, they eat little bitter compounds.

This is why a lot of cultures eat salads first, because they'll have all these bitter compounds in it, right? So they eat a small amount of the bitters before the bigger part of the meal. Because the bitters go in, they start binding all the bitter taste receptors, and up to 50 percent of all of your digestive signaling has to be activated with bitter receptors, right?

So if you imagine if we eliminate bitters completely from our meals, we lose upwards of 50 percent of all the digestive signaling, thus we get this incomplete digestion, which makes us feel sluggish, nauseous, bowel movements are off, all of those things, right? So it is really critical to add in the bitters into the diet on a daily basis.

I'm sold, I agree with you. And it's interesting because coffee is also bitter, right? So if you have a high quality, clean source of coffee, it's also bitter, you could have that.

That also stimulates that bile production. Probiotics are beneficial, obviously. We just made the case that we want the right kind.

Antibiotic Gut Impact

But then we have the opposite of probiotics, which are antibiotics, right? And antibiotic usage is sky high. So many people are taking antibiotics for reasons they shouldn't take it.

There's always a time and place for it, but usually it's not the right move. Yet, they're so easily prescribed by physicians, unfortunately. What exactly are antibiotics doing to our gut microbiome?

Yeah, that's a really important question because for the longest time, it's just been like, man, they're kind of harmless. You know, they don't have a toxicity level like other drugs do, right? But they have a very long lasting impact on individuals, right?

So physicians have kind of brushed them off as like, man, might as well take it. You know, there's no harm to it. Well, there is a lot of harm, right?

So there was actually a great research study out of Princeton at a microbiome conference when I was in, and they were presenting some of this data. What they were showing is that when you take a dose of antibiotics, within the first two and a half to three hours, 90 to 95 percent of all microbes are knocked out. Right?

Like all microbes, all your good and bad ones, everything's knocked down. Now, the thing about microbes is that they're pretty resilient. So the next three, four hours, they start to come back.

But the problem is they come back in very different proportions. One of the aspects of a healthy gut is a certain level of acidity. Maintaining a lower pH is really important in the gut.

The stomach is very acidic, but the small bowel, for the most part, from one end to the other, still is acidic. It's not neutral. It's still in the pH of around 5 and 6, and sometimes it goes to the higher 6s.

Nonetheless, it's still a little bit acidic. Now, the benefit of that acidity, number one, it helps with digestion, enzymes work better in that pH and so on. But the really important aspect of that is it controls the overgrowth of dysfunctional microbes like pathogens, and it controls the overgrowth of fungus and mold as well.

Now, how do we maintain that acidity throughout the digestive tract? Well, it's microbes that produce lactic acid. These lactic acid bacteria have to continuously produce lactic acid as they digest fibers and bitters and things that are coming through, and they maintain a certain pH.

Now, imagine in that very delicate environment where there's a certain delicate pH balance that keeps dysfunctional microbes at bay, when an antibiotic goes in, it's like an atom bomb, everything gets knocked down, the lactic acid production cuts off, which means that the pH is going to go up. When the microbes are regrowing, they're regrowing in a higher pH environment, which then favors the dysfunctional microbes to grow back faster. Then just as they've grown back in a slightly disproportionate level, the next dose of antibiotic comes in and boom, everything else gets knocked down again, the pH continues to rise, and then the dysfunctional microbes come back even faster.

With every single dose, what we're doing is we're driving towards the dysfunction that can be seen over two years after a single course of antibiotics. Studies have shown this. Now, here's the crazy part, and this is one thing I want people to really pay attention to.

If someone's taking course of antibiotics in your household, it doesn't just affect them, it affects you as well. This was a study out of Johns Hopkins that showed when they followed individuals that were given a course of antibiotics at the hospital. They took stool samples before they started the antibiotic, mapped out their microbiome, then they took samples during the course of antibiotics, and then for up to six months after they stopped the course of antibiotics.

As no surprise, their gut microbiomes became very dysfunctional from a microbiome perspective during the course of antibiotics, and they could see that same dysfunction six months later after stopping. But the crazy part is they also took two samples from others that lived in the same household, and they found similar dysfunctions occurring in those individuals, when the one person was on antibiotics, and then their dysfunction persisted for up to six months. We live in a microbiome cloud within our households, within our offices, within areas that we spend a lot of time in, and therefore, people around you and their behaviors and their choices can impact your microbiome significantly.

That is wild. That's so interesting.

Right?

You mentioned the acidity of the gut microbiome is very important, which I've looked into the research on this, and I've also interviewed other experts on the gut microbiome, and I really haven't come up with a quality answer or response. I want to ask you the question, if the gut is supposed to be acidic, which it is, I agree, and somebody is chronically drinking like high alkaline water over the course of months, maybe even years, every day, high alkaline water, could that affect the gut microbiome in a negative way?

I think it depends largely on their stomach, right? So your stomach has this capability of neutralizing things to a certain degrees because it produces bicarbonate and it produce hydrochloric acid. So it has two buffers.

It has a buffer for high acidity and it has buffer for alkalinity. So if your stomach is relatively healthy, what will happen when you drink that high alkaline water is it will likely become neutralized. It's going to go through your digestive tract as neutral pH.

Now, if your stomach is not working well, and like a lot of people's aren't, you have high stress and you have dysfunction in bicarbonate secretions, low hydrochloric acid and so on, then I think you could be creating a elevated pH in your bowels, which then is not favorable for your microbiome.

Interesting. That makes a lot of sense to me. What are some of the warning signs that the body presents to you, that your gut is not functioning well, that might show up years later with the diagnosis, but these are warning signs, let's say whispers the body is showing you right now.

Gut Warning Signs

What are the things to pay attention to?

Yeah. Some of the digestive specific symptoms would be things like bloating. If after you eat, you bloat, that's not normal and a lot of people just chalk it off to like that's just how their system is.

It's not normal to have to bloat. Some people will even bloat upon the first bites of food or drinking anything. That's also not normal.

If you tend to get some cramping in digestion, if you don't have regular bowel movements, that's also a sign, a key. You want to be able to have at least once a day bowel movements. If you're taking two, three days or you have bowel movements, that's not a normal thing at all.

Should you eliminate according to how many meals? If you have three full meals a day, would healthy bowel movements mean three bowel movements per day based off of three meals? Would that be a fair assessment or not necessarily?

Not necessarily. Some people, it depends on how their system works, but some people can process the entire meals of the day in one movement.

Okay.

And part of it depends on how long they sleep and how close those meals are to one another. But a really strong rule of thumb is that you have to be having at least one bowel movement a day.

And what's the optimal transient time between meal and bowel movement?

Yeah, that's a really important question. That's another thing I wanted people to think about measuring actually. Your transit time from when you eat something to when it comes out should be between 24 to 30 hours is ideal.

Oh, interesting. Now, it can be a little bit faster than that and still be normal. You can have it in 18, 19 hours.

But generally, it should be closer to 24 hours. It should take almost a full day, which means that the meals we're eating this afternoon for lunch, we should be for the most part getting rid of them or pooping them out if you will sometime in the late morning tomorrow. Now, it's really important to measure this actually, and people can do this on their own.

You can eat indicator food. For example, you can eat something with lots of seeds in it for a meal, and then watch for the seeds coming out on the other end. Even better way to do it is just eat a lot of beets in a given meal, because the color will not go away and you will see it in the toilet later on.

Then also what your quality of your stool looks like is really important. Everyone's familiar with the Bristol stool chart where you've got very soft watery stool all the way down to like little pebbles. What you want is well-formed longer logs that are compact, that tend to sink in the toilet.

You don't want them to float too much. That means you're not digesting your fats well and you're getting too much of that in your coming out the other end. You can also see a little bit of oily residue on the top of the water, if that's the case, and the color of your stool matters too.

Your stool should be brown to dark brown. That's a strong indicator of bile function. If your stool is very light in color, it means that you're not excreting enough bile and you're not getting bilirubin into the toilet, and so then the stool becomes lighter color.

Those are some of the digestive issues. Now, if you're starting to find yourself to be intolerant of certain foods, as you get older, you used to be able to eat this thing, now you can't, it totally messes you up. That's also not a good signal because that signals that you're losing something called oral tolerance, which is a miscommunication between your immune system and your microbiome.

Now, the symptoms away from the gut that are very indicative of gut issues is brain fog, as you're starting to get memory lapses and brain fog, anxiety. Anxiety is very connected to the gut. In fact, there's a nine-year-long study called the Netherlands Study on Anxiety and Depression, where they basically found that the byproduct of leaky gut, which is something called LPS, lipopolysaccharide, it's an endotoxin that leaks through into circulation was the best predictor of the onset and severity of anxiety, even in a nine-year follow-up of everything they looked at.

All the biomarkers, that presence of that endotoxin, which only ends up in circulation if it leaks through the gut, in a hyperpermeable intestine, that was the top indicator. If you're feeling brain fog, anxiety, mood disorders, lack of motivation, which is a dopamine issue, those are all indications that there's something going wrong with your gut that needs to be fixed. A couple other things would be skin issues.

Acne, eczema, psoriasis, those are all inflammatory skin issues that have a significant gut component. Then if you have metabolic issues, meaning you really struggle with resistant weight loss, so you can't lose weight even though you're eating right, you're exercising, you still find a lot of fat around the midsection, and you can't seem to get rid of that, and you have poor energy levels, your recovery from workouts is really slow. You know, you work out, you work out close to failure, and it takes you five days to feel better.

Those are all indications that your gut is dysfunction as well.

That's why this episode is so important. I did do a test for my gut microbiome a couple years ago to see the transit time. I took what's called the Blue Poo Challenge.

I did it with Dr. Shane Morris from Systemic Formulas. Are you familiar with that at all?

I am, yeah. I use a blue food diet.

It's a great way to do it. I took that and then I wrote it down what time. Then I looked at my poop to see when it came out blue.

It was about 21 hours, I think, when I did it. On average, I did it a few times, about 21 hours. I didn't realize it's a little bit longer than we wanted.

I thought 20 to 24 hours was the sweet spot. You're saying a little bit longer is what the research is showing. You said up to 30 hours or so is what we want?

It can go up to 30 hours, meaning up to 30 hours is not alarming. But yes, I think you're right in the area. That 24-hour mark, if you're plus or minus a few hours from that, that's where you want to be.

It can go down to as low as 17 or 18 in some people and not be an issue. And then it can go as high as upwards of 30 in some people and not be an issue. There is some variation.

But if it's 12, 13, 14 hours, then it's like, okay, that's way too fast. If it's 35, 40 hours, that's way too slow. And the beauty is like you can adjust that speed, right?

So just to give people a little bit of a tip, soluble fiber slows down the bowel movement, right? So if you're getting a 15 hour, 14 hour transit time, you need to up your soluble fiber because you need to start slowing down the transit time. Insoluble fiber speeds up the system.

So if you're at 32, 33 hours or more, you need to speed it up, consume more insoluble fiber. So that could be step one in how you kind of play with getting more to the ideal transit time and training your system to go at the right speed.

That's a good tip. Now I want to get into some of the solutions in terms of lifestyle changes, supplements that actually work for the microbiome. But before we get into that part, there's one more piece I want to talk about here when we talk about the causes, the problems.

Glyphosate Gut Effects

Glyphosate, which we know is in a huge percentage of our food supply in the United States. It's one of the reasons why Italy, for example, has a fraction of the obesity, a fraction of the diabetes they've outlawed or have strict restrictions on glyphosate and different food dyes and additives. Many years ago that we still allow in our food supply, and we're finding glyphosate, of course, in wine from California and coffee beans and corn, soy, wheat.

I mean, even if it's organic, they're still finding glyphosate from offspray. They've even been tested rainwater and found a good percentage of rainwater has glyphosate in it. Could you share with us exactly what glyphosate is doing to the gut microbiome, and how can we protect ourselves from this toxin?

Yeah. It is even more sinister than a lot of other toxins, and I'll explain why that is. Glyphosate as a compound interferes with something called the Schickamit pathway, which is a pathway used to make aromatic amino acids.

Every living thing on earth needs to make aromatic amino acids in order to construct certain proteins. The way they came up with this particular compound is that lower order creatures like insects and pests and all that use the Schickamit pathway to make these aromatic amino acids. They can use the compound, interfere with that process and kill off those pests.

Now, their assumption is that, hey, humans don't use the Schickamit pathway. We don't have that chemistry. So this has got to be perfectly safe for humans.

Well, as it turns out, our microbes use the same Schickamit pathway. Yes, it's not toxic to our cells, but it's very toxic to our microbiome. The reason I said it's even more sinister is because it selectively kills the beneficial microbes in the gut.

Because there are a lot of pathogens that have workarounds for this toxin, pseudomonas and so on. If you look at the array of microbes in your gut, the number of pathogens that have a workaround from this is way higher than the number of commensals that have a workaround for this. I'll give you an example of how dramatic it can be.

I was actually part of a study, designing a study and running a study at King's College in London. They were doing work on pediatric microbiomes. What we wanted to understand, because this hasn't been published before, is what happens to a pediatric microbiome if you expose it consistently to what is acceptable levels of glyphosate.

We used what would be found in things like cereals, because they use glyphosate to desiccate crops and things like that in oats and so on. Before they use them in cereals. We used the type of glyphosate that you find in the US specifically, ran the study on what would be a microbiome models, but we use a real child's pristine microbiome.

This was a child that we found that had no vaccinations, no antibiotic, used breastfed for, I think it was 18 months, vaginal birth, beautiful microbiome.

Very rare.

It was a four or five-year-old child, very rare. We had to find them in like Netherlands somewhere, this child's microbiome. We screened all these microbiomes, we inoculated the models with them.

These are completely mechanical guts that go all the way from the stomach down to the end of the large intestine. We did a control mechanism. We're feeding this system regular food, and then we're feeding one of the lanes regular food with cereals that have the EPA approved level of glyphosate exposure.

In three weeks, in the microbiome fed with the glyphosate exposure, that child's microbiome started to look like the microbiome of someone with inflammatory bowel disease. What we started to see was a dramatic increase in the production of ammonia. We started to see a significant reduction in the production of short chain fatty acids that butyrate, propionate, and acetate, and so on, that are really, really important for functionality.

We started to see higher degrees of inflammation in the lining because this model also has an intestinal lining in it, and so we can measure inflammatory processes. In that short amount of time, we could see that functional difference. Does that translate one-to-one into a human system?

Not necessarily, but it's a really good model to show what can happen in the human system over time. Then the exciting thing about it. Now, that was of course jarring when we saw it, but the exciting thing about it is then we started adding in a probiotic and we want to see if we maintain the glyphosate exposure.

If we added in the right type of probiotic, can we start to see that effect reverse? Sure enough, we did see that over the next three-week period.

Wow.

We started to see some repair occurring, which means that we have the capability of reducing the overall damage that things around us create, glyphosates and things that become really hard to avoid, that we inadvertently will get some exposure to if we utilize the right tools. Yeah, glyphosate is a big problem. I think it's also probably the reason why we have rampant wheat sensitivities in the US and celiac all the way to very severe gluten sensitivities.

Because I'm sure you've talked to people who are very sensitive to gluten. They can go to Italy and eat bread and be perfectly fine. Not have all the same effects.

But then they come here, they eat a crouton and they're done. For like a week. A lot of that is because of the hybridization of the wheat, and then their wheat doesn't come with the glyphosate.

That's right.

Which the glyphosate causes severe immune disruptions in the gut, which means your immune system doesn't know how to deal with this antigen, which is a wheat protein. So it elicits this massive inflammatory response.

Yeah. I hear that all the time from people who go to Italy, I could have all the pizza and pasta I want and I'm fine. But in the US, I have one little bit of grain and I flare up.

I personally don't have any wheat in the US. I'm staying away from it. I haven't intentionally had any wheat in probably, I don't know, 10, 15 years.

But I am going to Italy in two weeks for my honeymoon with my wife. And I plan on having wheat there. I'm going to see how my body responds to it, because it is different over there.

And one of the other things, Kiran, that with the topic of glyphosate that I pay attention to is, yes, our food supply, you want to make sure it's clean, it's organic. There's the dirty dozen versus the clean 15. It's a good kind of general start for people to get started with, ewg.org.

But also, when I walk around my neighborhood, we were talking about dogs before we hit record here. A lot of my neighbors, they have that sign in front of their, on their lawn that says, this application applied. Be careful.

When I see that, I make sure I walk across the street. I'd never let my dog poop on that lawn or pee on that lawn. I'm not stepping on it because that glyphosate application goes on your pet's paws and then your pet comes into your home.

Now, it's all over your home. On your shoes, it goes all over your home. The other thing is golf courses.

It's crazy how golf courses, in terms of real estate, the value of your house and property goes up when it's located close to a golf course. For me, I would never want to live by a golf course. Could you share a little bit why that is because of the glyphosate and how it's applied all over the place?

What have you seen with golf courses and people living around golf courses and what the glyphosate is doing to them?

Yeah, and the thing that's interesting about that is, it's especially people who are at retirement age, which means you're older, your body is even more vulnerable, and now you are getting a massive exposure to this. Now, one of the problems when you use it at industrial scale on like a golf course is it aerosolizes as well. You're getting it in the air, so you might be sitting in your backyard and enjoying the beautiful view of the course and breathing this stuff in.

Then of course, they water like crazy on the golf course, and all of that runoff is going into the water supply as well. You're going to get an inundation of this chemical exposure, which is a thousand times more than your neighbor just using it on their weeds, which already in itself is bad. Now, here's the other thing about glyphosate that we found in that study.

The active compound within Roundup, right, which is the most well-known brand of a glyphosate product, the glyphosate itself does have harm. But the thing that really makes it potent is the formula that they create to it. So they add like quaternary ammonias and other things to it as adjuvants.

When we did our study, we found that glyphosate had a little bit of harm to the microbiome as its individual compound. But when you took the formula that's found commercially, that was 10 times worse. In fact, we were looking for the most common formula that we hypothesized would be the most potent in creating damage.

We couldn't buy it anywhere in Europe. We remember the study was run in London. We had to buy it at Home Depot in the US.

When we had to ship it under all this toxic paperwork to the lab in London, as if we were exporting plutonium or something. Because most of those compounds that are in that commercial product are banned in Europe. They can't use it there.

When you think about the toxicity of that and the scale in which it's being used at places like golf courses, and the fact that it's just sprayed and aerosolized all over, you're creating this dome of toxicity all around you when you live on that golf course. And most people retire there, which means that they're already in their 60s and 70s. Their system is already vulnerable.

They're probably on two or three or four medications already, and it just accelerates the whole process because it just completely dismantles their microbiome.

You know, this is very bad news for some individuals who are watching and listening who live on the golf course. Look, once you're aware, you can make a decision. The cool thing is, your property is going to be worth a lot more on the golf course, so you could sell it and make a lot more money and go to somewhere that's not by a golf course.

It's so interesting once you go down that rabbit hole of glyphosate. I know Stephanie Senneth and Nancy Swanson have a great research on that Hickamay pathway we were talking about and the correlations, not causations between the applications of glyphosate in the late 80s and then diabetes and Alzheimer's, dementia, all these different diseases. And just as we just land the plane here on the glyphosate conversation, go to the solutions, I want my audience to consider this.

Italy, they eat way more carbohydrates than we do in the US. Number one, they have a fraction of the gyms that we have in the US. Yet, they are less obese, less diabetic.

Why is that? It's the toxins, it's the chemicals, right? So once you fix the gut, you can't avoid these chemicals in the US.,

which is the bad news. But the good news, like you mentioned earlier, when you add in a quality probiotic, when you add in the lifestyle changes, things begin to shift within weeks. So let's talk about that, because your company, Just Thrive, who I love these products, I've been taking them now, you've developed these formulations.

There's probiotics, there's prebiotics, there's different things that you offer, but let's start with the probiotic piece. Can you unpack, explain, the different probiotic supplements out there, and then why the one you have in your Just Thrive product is different than what we see in the stores?

Yeah. I got into the probiotic space as a research microbiologist, so that's my training and background. So I looked at it from a microbiologist perspective.

What I saw that really did not make sense was that what I call the hodgepodge, kitchen sink formulas, you look at all the strains that are on there and you go, why are these paired together? What is the synergy between these strains? In fact, some of these can compete with one another.

In fact, studies have been done at University College Cork in Ireland, and the APC, which is one of the largest microbiome research institutes in the world, they found that often when you mix certain strains together, they knock out each other's effects. Because microbes are biological entities, they're complex, they have thousands of genes. So you have to know with deliberate action that you're mixing things that are going to work together.

On top of that, I started seeing all this stuff in the refrigerator, and I would go to the stores and I'd say, what's the best probiotic you have? They'd always point me to stuff in the refrigerator, and I'd say, well, why is it in the refrigerator? They'd say, well, because you need to keep the cultures alive.

So as soon as you buy it, get it home and get it in your refrigerator. Then my question was, so if I set it outside in my room, which is 70 degrees, it's going to die? They say, yes.

And then I said, well, how does it survive 98.6 degrees in the body? And they never had an answer for that. And this is back in like 2013, 2012.

And I was like, OK, there's a lot of nonsense here, unfortunately. So how do we actually find microbes that can move the needle on our health, that can make changes in the microbiome? That's when I went down that rabbit hole, looking first for clues through evolutionary biology, because we've had long-term relationships with microbes in as humans as we evolved.

So I started looking in the environment, started looking at transient microbes, started looking at our natural ways of exposing ourselves to microbes. Then on top of that, it has to meet that first definition. It has to be alive.

And we all know that our gastric system is a very harsh place for microbes. It's called a gastric barrier because one of its roles is to kill things that are coming through, right? Because we're eating food all over the place and we don't want pathogens and dysfunctional microbes coming in.

So then my next line of thinking was, what kind of microbes would humans have naturally been exposed to, ongoing in their lives, but also have the natural capability of surviving through the gastric system to meet that first definition of a probiotic. And so it came down to understanding bacillus endospores. So bacillus endospores are fascinating microbes.

They've been around since the beginning of time. In fact, there was a couple of studies on this concept of panspermia. I don't know if you're familiar with that concept of panspermia.

No, I'm not explaining.

So the idea is that on meteorites and all that, they've sampled both meteorites that have landed on Earth, but most recently meteorites that they've sampled in outer space, they find amino acids, nucleic acids, and cellular building blocks on these meteorites. Then the idea of panspermia is during the bombardment period of Earth's evolution, that the Earth was bombarded with all of the components that are required for cellular construction. That's part of how maybe cells started to come together.

One of the questions that was asked is, are there microbes that can survive interstellar space on a rock and then bombard and land on Earth? And in fact, they took Bacillus endospores and showed that they can survive in the cold and vacuum of space for seven years. Wow.

Right? So they could have been the initial inoculation of cellular life on Earth. They found Bacillus endospores, for example, in a cave in Southern California in salt crystals.

Scientists have been going in caves trying to look for new microbes because microbes make antimicrobials and antibiotics. And as we increase our antibiotic resistance, they're trying to look for new ideas around antibiotics. So what they've done is they isolated these microbes from these deep caves in Southern California.

They plated them. They were still alive. These microbes were 150 million years old.

You know, frozen solid, not frozen, but stagnant in salt crystals. And they could still plate them, right? And so these microbes have been around before us.

They've written the rules on how multicellular organisms communicate. And our ancestors got daily exposure to them because our ancestors ate dirt. They ate off the land.

They drank water from rivers and streams. And these types of microbes are fairly ubiquitous in natural environments. So I honed in on Bacillus endospores and I said, okay, is there evidence for Bacillus endospores having probiotic function?

And as it turns out, the pharmaceutical industry, before it got corrupted with first generation, second generation antibiotics and all that, actually launched Bacillus endospores as a treatment for dysentery and chronic respiratory illnesses back in the 1940s and 50s.

Wow.

And in fact, one of the drugs that was launched by Sanofi Aventis, which became a big pharma company out of France, that drug is still on the market today. It's a prescription spore treatment for upper respiratory infection and dysentery. Right?

And so this was the first use of actual probiotics clinically, but it was done through the pharmaceutical industry before patenting small compounds and going after that whole thing became a thing. Right? And so I went after the Bacillus endospores and started identifying the best researchers in the world for it.

Simon Cutting and his team out of Royal Holloway University of London, are the best researchers in spores. We licensed those spores, we started studying them when we found them to be absolutely fascinating in terms of what they can do in our gut for us. They have all this innate intelligence themselves.

We didn't have to engineer them to do anything. We just had to be smart enough to look for them, find them and then put them into the system.

That is interesting. That's a lot of new information to me. That's really, really fascinating.

Okay, so this is my stack that I have here. I've been taking your prebiotic. We spoke about the prebiotic.

I've actually taken this with water right before my coffee in the morning. So I'll have a scoop of this with water before my coffee in the morning. Now, let me ask you this.

I was thinking about putting it in my coffee, but the coffee is very hot. So I was wondering, I wasn't sure if I was going to lose some of the benefits. Can I put this in my coffee or not a good idea?

You can. Yeah, you can. It may clump up a little bit.

That's the only issue.

I'm okay with that.

Yeah. But other than that, yes, the heat is not an issue with it. That's a very complex carbohydrate that is very hard to break down except for certain keystone species in the gut.

And then if you pair the prebiotic with the probiotic, we've done studies where the probiotic and the prebiotic are actually a symbiotic because they more than double each other's effect as a result. And then the probiotic, one of our first studies on it, which is the thing that interested me the most about the probiotic, is that we showed that we can significantly reduce leaky gut by over 75 percent in just 30 days. We published that study in 2017 in a fairly major gastroenterology journal.

And the technical term for leaky gut is called endotoxemia. This is why you ask conventional doctors, hey, is leaky gut? And they'll say, oh, it's not real, it's not a thing.

But then you look in the research and it's described as endotoxemia, metabolic endotoxemia, and there's probably 400 papers on it. So we published that study and we showed the first probiotic ever shown to actually alleviate leaky gut and the systemic inflammation that comes along with it. And then you add the prebiotic to it, it more than doubles its effect.

Wow, okay. So are you referring to this one here, the probiotic with antioxidant, or is it a different one? This is the one.

It's that one. Yeah, the probiotic with antioxidant.

So I started doing this one unknowingly about, I didn't even know about that study. I started doing both, but the way I did it, and I want to get your input, I started doing the prebiotic every day in the morning and then I started doing this one every other day, the probiotic.

Yeah. That's a perfect way to do it. If your body is okay with it every other day, meaning you don't get any cramping and all that, because sometimes this probiotic can go in and really make a change in the microbiome.

I mentioned earlier, a really effective probiotic is one that actually moves a needle on the microbiome. It's quite surprising and we actually published a study in a peer review journal where we showed just three weeks of the probiotic shifts the diversity of your gut microbiome by upwards of 20-25 percent, which is huge for a microbiome with 30 trillion organisms. Then you might say, well, how does it do that?

How does it actually change the diversity of the microbiome? Well, it does something called quorum sensing. This is my favorite feature of these unique microbes.

They get into a microbial environment and they can read the chemical signatures of all the bacteria around it. It's cool. As a result of that, they can identify dysfunctional microbes by those chemical signatures.

They go sit next to those dysfunctional microbes. They'll do both. They'll produce little antimicrobials in that microenvironment, and they can flag that microbe for destruction by the immune system.

So they can bring down dysfunctional bacteria and they can start bringing back up beneficial bacteria because they also produce compounds that the beneficial bacteria eat. Now, that's why this probiotic was the one that we use in that glyphosate study. Even though we were continuously feeding the system glyphosate, once we added the probiotic, we started to see it reverse some of the effects, because it's starting to fight back and it's starting to bring back the dysfunction, bring back the beneficial microbes and compete against the dysfunctional ones.

That's so interesting. Yeah. So what I would recommend to my audience, my community is to start with these two, the prebiotic and the probiotic.

If you're somebody that has chronic digestive issues, meaning most things you eat will either cause you really loose stool, cramping, bloating, or you get a lot of constipation frequently, you've got a degree of toxicity in your gut that needs to be managed.

Or let's say you live in a place where you don't get a lot of clean food and you're eating stuff out of the grocery store that you know is probably covered with glyphosate and other contaminants. That's a big issue in the US. We see that this compound, which are antibodies, bovine antibodies, bind to all of these toxins in your gut, neutralize them and take them out through defecation. That becomes a really, really important product for certain people.

And that is the carnivore diet. I love the carnivore diet short-term. I have a lot of call...

I just spoke at Meatstock 2026. It was a carnivore diet event, right? There was a whole bunch of carnivores there.

And I love my carnivore friends. And I love hearing the stories, the testimonials are just so incredible. Like the anecdotal evidence is so amazing.

With that being said, I'm not a fan of long-term carnivore. I'm not a fan of long-term ketosis. I'm a fan of metabolic flexibility.

So I've done different experiments where I've done a carnivore diet. Like for example, my most recent experiment, I did 90 days of a carnivore diet, just meat and fat. And I tested my gut microbiome with the stool test on day one.

I did extensive lab work on day one. I looked at heart rate variability, resting heart rate, deep sleep, REM sleep, all on day one. And then I went into this carnivore diet and then I retested all those metrics, the same stool test, the same labs on day 90 before I broke it.

And when I reviewed the results, especially when it came to the gut microbiome, I saw some things that were really interesting that I want to share with you and then get your thoughts on it, right? So my diversity, my gut diversity and the good diversity increased from day one to day 90. As a matter of fact, I had seven keystone bacteria show up on that day 90 report that was not there on the day one report.

I felt overall better. I lost some body fat, inflammation went down, all labs improved. They were already good on day one.

They were even better on day 90. It was overall a great experiment. Now, I didn't have any fiber.

I didn't have any vegetables. I didn't have any fruit. I didn't have any of these prebiotics, postbiotics.

So what exactly happened there with my gut? How was it that I removed the fiber that's so important for the gut and my gut microbiome improved? And then if I would have kept with that carnivore diet for six months or a year, what were the changes I would have seen then?

What are your thoughts?

Yeah, that's a great experiment that you did. Question for you, with the meat that you consumed, did you eat any fermented meats, any organs, any of that?

I had organ meat in supplement form or sometimes blended like the ground beef with heart, kidney, and liver. I did red meat. I did do eggs as well.

I still had my coffee, so technically had some bitters. Then I did dairy in the form of sheep and goat dairy, and then some fatty fish like salmon. So it wasn't like a strict just red meat diet, it was a little bit varied, but it was carnivore.

Yeah. I would say, I think what you hit on there is a sweet spot of an interventional diet that can really reset your system. I think what you're seeing in the diversity portion is the benefit of a reset.

Some of the things you consume can feed a healthy microbiome. The coffee, for example, and the flavonols and things in coffee actually feed a healthy microbiome like acromancia that can actually increase acromancia's growth.

I saw that go up by the way. Sorry to cut you off. Acromancia went up on that day 90 report.

I'm sure, were you also fasting through this?

Yeah. I typically do 16, 18 daily so I kept doing that during the carnivore.

Because fasting actually on its own increases the microbiome diversity which is a benefit to the fasting, which is one of the reasons I've been doing intermittent fasting for 15 years I think about now. Love it. I think a couple of things that I would gain from your observation.

Number one, I think some of the diversity of what you're eating in terms of the meat sources is providing nutrients to certain microbes within your system. For someone that was just eating steak every day, I would say for that period, they probably wouldn't have gotten the same results that you got. I think the addition of fasting certainly supports and helps the microbiome even when there's not a lot of fiber coming through or any fiber coming through at all.

I think finally, if you continued that for another three to four months, you might start to see diminishing returns.

That's what I thought too.

Because I think you've hit a sweet spot. There's microbial studies, interventional studies on two, three, four, five, six months and longer. What you tend to find is that two to four months, usually averaging around three, is a sweet spot to create deep intervention within the microbiome, but then it tapers off, and it can taper off quite dramatically.

I love that approach and I love the idea of a fairly diverse carnivore diet for a short amount of time, a three-month to reset because it also then resets your metabolism and all kinds of other things. But then start going back to starting to diversify your system by just adding in some prebiotics, adding in some fruit and so on. But I would also say if you continued that diet, but you kept taking a prebiotic supplement, you would probably continue to see a benefit in the microbiome over time as well.

Because the prebiotics just feed that diversity within the microbiome.

That makes sense. Now my diet is mostly carnivore, it's like 80% carnivore, but I'm taking the prebiotic, I'm taking the probiotic, I'm also doing a lot of fermented foods like kimchi, sauerkraut, kefir, et cetera. But I tend to agree with you in terms of doing it longer, I would have seen diminishing returns.

Now I know we're going to get some comments here on the YouTube channel saying, but Ben, I've been doing carnivore for years, I feel great, I look great. Great, like if you look great, you feel great, you're doing your labs and everything looks great, like keep doing it, right? But for most people, I think some variation is going to be the key here with the gut microbiome.

It sounds like you agree with me, right?

Yeah, you want to get those fermentable carbohydrates into your system for long-term for the average person. Some may have systems that they just do better without it or with very minimal levels. But generally, if you look at the studies on long-term microbiome health, diversity is improved by some form of fermentable carbohydrates coming into your system.

Yeah. Often that resistant starches, prebiotics, those types of things.

I always end the conversations with another supplement we haven't spoken about, it's called vitamin G. Vitamin G is vitamin gratitude and all the amazing benefits you get from feeling gratitude. Gratitude, I tell my audience, is not a practice, it's a feeling.

It's strength training for your soul. You produce oxytocin and dopamine and puts cortisol down, regulates cortisol and activates your parasympathetic nervous system, which is great for digestion, right? So Kiran, what do you have gratitude for today, my friend, that you want to express with my audience?

You know, a few things, so but let me pick, maybe I'll pick two things. I do, I practice gratitude so much because I totally agree with you. Not only is it good for the soul, it's actually really good for the body because of the oxytocin and oxytocin works against the stress molecules like epinephrine, norepinephrine and cortisol.

And in fact, stress is one of the biggest drivers of gut microbiome dysfunction and increased leaky gut, right? So that gratitude is therapeutic against your leaky gut as well. One of the things I'm extremely grateful for are, you know, not to sound cheesy, but programs like yours that help people like me get the word out on the things we've been working on, the research we do, the developments we have and all that because everything I do would be meaningless unless people know about it.

And so I'm very grateful for the opportunity to be able to do this and talk to your audience about the work that we've done because, you know, 15, 16 years has gone into a lot of this, you know, and ultimately it can be very beneficial to people if they know about it. So I'm very grateful for that. And then number two, I'm grateful for living in the time that we are in the discovery of the microbiome because we're finally learning about 90% of our functionality.

Before the era of understanding the microbiome, we were really only looking at about 10% of the human system. And so it's an exciting time because I think over the next few years, there'll be a microbiome solution to the vast majority of the chronic illnesses because that's just how powerful the microbes are in our system and how much they affect us. So it's a great time to be living right now.

Very exciting times. So I'm grateful for you and your tremendous amount of research and dedication and bandwidth and money you put into this to create products that actually work. And we're not just essentially creating expensive urine, as they say, with cheap supplements out there.
