And while doctors and scientists don’t have the full story on this virus yet, here are five things we do know as of February 1:

  1. Novel Coronavirus is one of many coronaviruses that typically infect animals. Seven types of coronaviruses are known to infect humans, and tend to attack the respiratory system. This strain doesn’t appear to be as deadly (at least not so far) as other types of coronaviruses like SARS. 
  2. The virus was first identified in Wuhan, China. There are now more than 13,000 confirmed cases in China and at least 259 deaths caused by this virus. Worldwide, there have been over 40,000 confirmed cases and more than 1,000 related deaths, but the count is changing rapidly. 
  3. In the U.S., there are only 8 confirmed cases of coronavirus, including one that was spread through person-to-person contact. Those cases are currently confined to 5 states: Arizona, California, Illinois, Massachusetts, and Washington. The virus has not begun spreading throughout the general community in the U.S. (at of this time). 
  4. The virus starts by causing fever, coughing, and shortness of breath, and show up somewhere between 2 and 14 days after exposure. Symptoms may be very mild, though in some cases – usually people with weakened immune systems – can become severe. And only a very small percent of cases have turned fatal. 
  5. The best way to protect yourself against the Novel Coronavirus – or any circulating virus, for that matter – is by and practicing good basic hygiene (like frequent hand washing) and strengthening your immune system.

So far this flu season, the CDC reports at least 19 million infections… 180,000 hospitalizations… and 10,000 deaths from the flu.
