This year cold and flu season brings a new threat to deal with: the novel Coronavirus.
Every day this virus out of China makes new and scarier headlines. And while it hasn’t attacked millions of Americans, at least not so far, it has begun slowly spreading throughout the U.S.
Right now, you’re more likely to face the flu than this Coronavirus, but its path could change dramatically at any time.
Your best defense: vigilant hygiene and a rock-solid immune system.
To defeat the Novel Coronavirus – or any other virus that crosses your path – you need your body’s natural defense system to be in top shape. And that means making sure you have plenty of antibodies – also called immunoglobulins – to fight off incoming threats.
5 True Facts About Novel Coronavirus
Sensational headlines make the Coronavirus seem as deadly as the black plague, but that’s not how the virus is actually behaving… at least not so far. Misinformation is flying around, causing unnecessary distress.
And while doctors and scientists don’t have the full story on this virus yet, here are five things we do know as of February 1:
- Novel Coronavirus is one of many coronaviruses that typically infect animals. Seven types of coronaviruses are known to infect humans, and tend to attack the respiratory system. This strain doesn’t appear to be as deadly (at least not so far) as other types of coronaviruses like SARS.
- The virus was first identified in Wuhan, China. There are now more than 13,000 confirmed cases in China and at least 259 deaths caused by this virus. Worldwide, there have been over 40,000 confirmed cases and more than 1,000 related deaths, but the count is changing rapidly.
- In the U.S., there are only 8 confirmed cases of coronavirus, including one that was spread through person-to-person contact. Those cases are currently confined to 5 states: Arizona, California, Illinois, Massachusetts, and Washington. The virus has not begun spreading throughout the general community in the U.S. (at of this time).
- The virus starts by causing fever, coughing, and shortness of breath, and show up somewhere between 2 and 14 days after exposure. Symptoms may be very mild, though in some cases – usually people with weakened immune systems – can become severe. And only a very small percent of cases have turned fatal.
- The best way to protect yourself against the Novel Coronavirus – or any circulating virus, for that matter – is by and practicing good basic hygiene (like frequent hand washing) and strengthening your immune system.
A strong immune system can knock out viruses before they have a chance to dig in and multiply. And if a virus (or other pathogen) does get the better of you, a robust immune system can help minimize the severity of your symptoms and help you get better faster.
So far this flu season, the CDC reports at least 19 million infections… 180,000 hospitalizations… and 10,000 deaths from the flu.
How Your Immune System Fights Viruses
Your body has a dedicated army of special proteins called immunoglobulins (antibodies) trained to fight off viruses, bacteria, and other infectious invaders. Without that self-defense system, you’d be sick all the time. And even with a solid immune system, you may still get knocked down by illness every once in a while – especially if it’s one that your immune system doesn’t recognize yet.
That’s why it’s crucial to keep your immune system in strong shape, and make sure you have a full supply of immunoglobulins at the ready.
Among the immunoglobulins, the most plentiful (by far) and most active are immunoglobulin G – commonly known as IgG. Your IgG antibodies constantly search for viruses, bacteria, and other germs, trying to catch, contain, and neutralize them before you get sick. (Learn more)
But sometimes, the world throws more germs at you than your IgG antibodies can easily deal with. Other times, your body may not create enough IgG to deal with every threat your immune system is facing.
To make sure you have a robust supply of IgG – especially if you suspect your body’s natural resources are running low – you can restock with special high quality IgG supplements.
