Why was this study conducted?
Leaky gut syndrome results from a chronic overgrowth of harmful bacteria in the gut. The natural byproduct of these pathogens is low-level irritants, an excess of which impacts the intestinal wall until it develops holes.
These irritants are called LPS (lipopolysaccharide) endotoxins. (“Endo” means “inside,” so endotoxins are poisons produced from within the body, rather than coming from the outside.)
These irritating endotoxins, along with other inappropriate compounds, then leak from the gut into the bloodstream, stressing both the body’s immune and detox functions.
Clinical leaky gut (metabolic endotoxemia), and the immune, detox and digestive disorder it creates, is becoming recognized as a significant contributing factor to obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, inflammatory bowel disease, cognitive decline and immune dysfunctions - in other words, most chronic disease.
The goal of the study was to address leaky gut by introducing these proprietary strains.
The hypothesis was that the spore-based probiotic would reduce harmful gut bacteria and their LPS endotoxins enough that the intestinal lining would be enabled to begin healing and sealing the holes and other damage located there.
How was this study conducted?
Phase One - Conducted at the University of North Texas on nearly 100 people, mostly college students, all initial applicants had to first successfully pass 12 tests to exclude for pre-existing or hidden medical conditions.
Phase Two – Two blood samples were drawn. The first was before eating and determined baseline statistics for LPS endotoxins, ghrelin, insulin, leptin and 11 different inflammatory markers.
Then participants ate cheese pizza from a local restaurant and returned 5 hours later to give a second sample.
The simple act of digesting food, regardless of the content, naturally puts stress on the intestinal wall and, when the gut is already irritated and swollen, can stimulate leakiness. Eating low-quality, processed food high in fat and toxic chemicals – like cheese pizza - is even more stressful to the gut wall.
When endotoxins leak through, peak levels occur in the blood about 5 hours after eating.
Phase Three - Only individuals with measurable leaky gut endotoxins in their second blood sample were given a month’s supply of capsules. Because the study was double-blind, nobody knew who got the Just Thrive strains and who got the placebo. Instructions were to take the daily recommended dose with food for 30 days.
Phase Four – Day 31, everyone returned to the lab to give a second round of blood samples, again before and after eating cheese pizza.
3 surprising outcomes
The first shock to the researchers was that approximately 50% of these seemingly extremely healthy, young people nevertheless showed LPS endotoxins in their first post-meal blood sample, in some cases “severely high” levels.
The second shocker was those who got the placebo worsened by 32%, meaning the amount of endotoxins increased in their blood by about 1% every day during the previous month.
But the third eye-opener was extremely good news! Those who got the licensed strains in Just Thrive Probiotic & Antioxidant showed a rather astonishing:
- 42% reduction of endotoxins, demonstrating that the intestinal lining was able to substantially heal and seal itself, thus preventing the leakage of these gut bacteria-produced toxins into the bloodstream.
Other results included:
- 24% reduction in triglycerides, a fat that increases when the liver is stressed and decreases as the toxic load goes down,
- Dramatic lowering of ghrelin, also known as the “hunger hormone” because until ghrelin levels goes down, we don’t feel satisfied and keep eating, and
- “Significant” reductions in IL-1B and IL-12p70 (NOTE: IL-12p70 modulates the release of TNF-a), as well as reduction trends in IL-6, IL-8 and MCP-1, all inflammatory cytokines associated with poor sugar response, slower recovery processes and a high bodily inflammatory load.
Furthermore, all these shifts occurred despite the fact the participants made no changes in either diet or lifestyle.
In fact, the researchers were concerned at the outset that typical college life stressors would negate any benefit the probiotic might bring: microwaved and processed food, fast foods, soft/energy drinks, artificial sugars, colorings and flavorings, alcohol, lack of sleep, etc. Nevertheless…
Key to these results is that the strains used are proprietary spore-based bacteria.
Modern life has sterilized spore-based bacteria out of soil and food
The 32% increase in endotoxins when NOT consuming the strains in Just Thrive versus the 42% decrease for those who DID (a 74% total difference) in just one month underlines that consuming spore bacillus strains appears to be critical to gut microbiome balance.
